Positive Reinforcement for your Puppy

Training a puppy is a lot of work. Some days may seem easy, while others can be terrible. Being consistent to have your puppy understand is important. How can you properly train your puppy?  One great way is positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is a reward based training. It is one of the best ways to help train your puppy to be the best dog they can be.

On top of positive reinforcement making sure your puppy has enough mental stimulation is important.  If your puppy is bored they will likely exhibit “bad” behaviors when in reality they are just not being stimulated enough. So to properly train your puppy it is important to make sure they are getting enough exercise and activity.

So besides giving your puppy a lot of exercise, how do you train them to be the best

Immediately praise them

This means when they do something you want then immediately give them a treat, toy or a belly rub. It shows when they do something you want they get the attention they desire. In turn, it makes them want to do it again.

Get everyone involved

If one person starts training and no one in the household is helping then the training will not work well. Everyone has to be on board with this type of training to make it as effective as possible.

Be Consistent

Everyone has to be consistent. If you do it one way and a family member does it a different way then your puppy will get confused and will not be trained the way you would have hoped. Being consistent is extremely important in training your puppy.

Try to not use treats

Yes, maybe using treats is the best option for your pet, but keep in mind that for every treat you use, that is more calories to your pet’s diet. Making sure they do not become overweight is very important. Be conscious of how much you are giving them and even consider giving a piece of kibble as the treat.

Most Important: Have Patience

Patience is extremely important. Your puppy will not learn immediately, it will take time but if you have patience you will see an amazing outcome in the end.

Training a puppy takes time but the bond you have will be stronger then ever.
